What would happen if a gay porn star fell in love with a writer of erotic m/m novels?

Set in an opulent house in San Diego that also serves as a porn studio, the story follows Stefan as he falls in love with Nate, a budding author from England, and in the process comes out as gay. Despite working in a gay porn studio and having sex with his best buddy on a regular basis, Stefan outwardly claims to be straight, although he enjoys the sex and substantial pay from his gay videos. This changes when he meets Nate, who has been given the opportunity to observe the inner workings of Blue House Film Studios to add realism to his latest erotic novel.

I can't even pin down why I was left with such a sense of antipathy to this book.

It could be because almost nothing happens, except a few manufactured mini-crises just to keep the pages turning. Other than that, it's a story of boy-meets-boy, boy-falls-in-love-with-boy, boy and boy live happily ever after.

One of the boys is a gay porn star who is supposed to be "gay-for-pay". However, it doesn't take him more than a day or two, after meeting the British boy, to decide that he's actually gay - even though he's been having sex with men day-in-and-day-out for five years. Is he so lacking in self-awareness that he doesn't even consider the fact that he might actually be gay? On the other hand, he doesn't get particularly upset at the sudden insight. I mean, the coming out appears to be no big deal. Neither is the falling in love, which happens, pretty much, over a few days and over the phone.

One of the things that bothered me is that I'm pretty confident he was cast as a gay porn star just to have an excuse to throw in a bunch of gratuitous sex scenes with the other characters at the studio.

Both boys go back to England for one of the most boring few weeks I can imagine. Yawn. While there, the Brit's older ex-boyfriend shows up and the big crisis of the book is whether the Brit will take up again with his lover, or all of them together as a threesome? Yawn, again.

But I think what got me off to a bad start with this book was the basic quality of the writing (or perhaps editing?). The author is British and she writes almost all of the book from the point of view of the American kid. It is a real talent to nail a voice that's in a language other than your own and sadly, this book doesn't quite manage it. Both the dialog and internal dialog, at times, take on the character of a "clipped" British accent, which makes the San Diego porn-star MC less than convincing:

"I am ready to leave for the following day"

"But I'm finding it hard to do so" (Americans would say "I'm finding it hard to do").

"He wishes for me to treat his house as my home" and,

"...upper most" (anyone ever heard of "uppermost"?).

I'll stop before I get an irredeemable reputation as a member-in-good-standing of the grammar and spelling police - but honestly, it's not about that. It's about the fact that, not for one moment, was I able to believe I was hearing a 26-year-old native Californian speaking, which made it hard for me to care about him. Which is whence, I believe, my ennui with this book probably springs.

You might like it better. For me, I seriously weighed only giving this book two stars, but relented, at the last minute, and gave it three stars to acknowledge "a good try".

The other reviews were stellar, so perhaps I missed something charming about this book - I don't remember any moments of either charm or humor. Regardless, before purchasing, read the sample and see if you get the same negative first impression I did. If not, then, by all means, give it a go.

Boys on Film edition by Lily G Blunt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this story very much, I loved the characters Stefan, and Nate. Ms Blunt did a very good job in writing this story. A MUST READ.
this is a briliant book and story line and i am very proud to say that i know this person , you must read it and follow lilly !!
I loved this book! Again as I've said, I love books about porn. ) I could totally imagine all this happening. It had just the right amount of drama, sex and lots of LOVE!!!
Never recieved it
New to me author. A contemporary mm story set around the porn industry. I loved the honesty of the MC. Not sure I would trust Nate and Karl. I'll read more from this author.
I will admit that when I first read the blurb for this book, I wasn't sure if it was going to be something I would enjoy reading. I was under the assumption that the book was going to be about a porn movie house and would be full of explicit sexual content. I was wrong. Remember don't judge a book by its cover.

In first meeting "Stefan" his camera name, in this story, he appears to be both arrogant and straight. Neither of which is the case. Stephan works for Blue House Film Studios both in front of the camera and behind it. One of the House's most popular porn stars, he has quite a following of fans. And he loves sex, doesn't matter whether it's a man or woman, it's all just sex to him; until a budding writer of M/M romances comes into his life.

Nate "something or other" comes to Blue House because he's written a story that the owner of the film studio wants to incorporate into the studio's web site. It just happens to describe some of the models from Blue House and scenes from some of their video's and starring Stefan. He's been a teacher in England for most of his life but wants to be a writer. Stefan becomes his tour guide while he's in California.

They feel an instant connection to each other but it takes time to reach a mutual decision that it is something they both want. Nate has recently broken up with a long time lover and Stefan is just now realizing that he is gay and always has been. Two big hurtles in themselves to make a relationship work.

Stefan goes back to England with Nate so that they can get to know each other better and while there they finally become intimate. Stefan seems to be racked with pain over making sure that Nate knows they are making love not just having sex. Sex is what he does in front of the camera and what he did with his "friends with benefits". Nate doesn't seem to be bothered by Stefan's job and repeatedly tells Stefan he knows its his job. Still Stefan is very insecure and when Karl, Nate's ex shows up things intensify.

There's a misunderstanding between Nate and Stefan leading Stefan to return home, hurt and devastated by Nate's apparent infidelity. I enjoyed this story and the writing style of Ms. Blunt. I would have given it a 4.5 if I could but only because I thought the HEA was rushed at the end and could have been more complicated for the two characters. All in all a very good read and I truly enjoyed it.
