At 25 Hank owns a small parcel of land in Australia's rural southwest where he supplements his income from the property with seasonal shearing. Hank is a "shearing gun" - an ace shearer able to shear large numbers of sheep in a single day. His own father kicked him out when his sexuality was revealed, and since no one would ever hire a gay shearer, Hank has remained firmly closeted ever since.

Elliot is the newbie doctor in town - city born and somewhat shell-shocked from his transplant to the country. When a football injury brings Hank to Elliot's attention, an inappropriate sexual glance and the stuttered apology afterward kick-starts their friendship. Romance and love soon blossom, but it's hard for either of them to hope for anything permanent. As if the constant threat of being caught isn't enough, Elliot's contract runs out after only a year.

This one came highly recommended to me. I love books set in Australia so I was excited to read it before I ever opened the cover. (Love the cover too) I was not disappointed. This is a wonderful romance with a wealth of information about the life and work involved in raising and shearing sheep and living in a rural Australian village. It is rather detailed regarding the shearing and instead of it being tedious, I was completely intrigued. The author made me feel like I was experiencing it right alongside of Hank and Elliot.

Hank is a great character, humorous, hardworking, and very likeable. His fear of coming out is completely understandable after the reaction he gets from his father when he came out to him and what his uncle endured because he is gay. His Uncle and his partner are lovely characters and I enjoyed the role they play in the story.

Hank makes sure he fits in Dumbleyung. No dating, no local hook ups – No fishing in one’s backyard – (I love the fishing analogies he uses, several good chuckles there) He also plays football, which brings him to the local clinic after an injury, and under the care of Elliot, the new doctor in Dumbleyung. When Elliot gets caught checking Hank out during his exam, Elliot goes to Hank’s farm to apologize, Hank assures him that it is no problem, he won’t let on to anyone and that he is ok with Elliot being gay.

Elliot is a wonderful character; he is from the city and was out and proud until he came to Dumbleyung. He is a brilliant doctor and a sweet man who enjoys the small things in life even though he comes from a wealthy family. Thinking he was going to have to be in the closet and have no close friends or companions until his contract is up, the unexpected friendship with Hank changes all of that. Even more so as they get to know one another and he learns Hank is more like him than he was led to believe. Oh, this scene is priceless.

The story has many humorous moments, wonderful secondary characters and some beautiful, tender moments between Hank and Elliot. This has to be one of my favorite books that I have read this year. Don’t be intimidated but the Australian vernacular, there is a glossary in the front of the book, but the author does a great job giving enough information to be able to figure out the words or phrases from context.
After reading this book, I can see why it was highly recommended and I completely agree.

The Shearing Gun (Audible Audio Edition) Renae Kaye Dave Gillies Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

I actually listened to this one. A nice story without too much angst. There is a trial by fire later on in the book which makes sense, because things seemed to be going a bit to easy to start after they warmed up to each other. I liked that even though in the beginning there was a bit of 'unevenous' I guess you'd say, as in one MC was very smart, well to do, but not what the 'farmer/rancher' deemed overly attractive (wow, the ego) he himself being used to getting looks due to his muscles from working the land along with having been born with attractive features. Then, before you knew it, you realize from the words and descriptive thoughts in his mind how he's grown to care for this person. Nice to not be insta-love.

I always enjoy the 'ranching' ones from Australia and New Zealand, and always seem to learn something each time I read/listen to ones from that area. Simple things, like Christmas is during the Summer there, and the little excerpts talking about the weather, the wool, the different breeds of sheep, and all the little everyday things like mending fences and building the home fires to warm up the MCs. Cozy. Loved that. This author has been new to me this year, but I've enjoyed her stories very much, and she tends to have some good comfort reads.
Renae Kaye is an auto-buy for me. I loved her first two books.

With The Shearing Gun the author has moved out of the city and into rural Australia. Hank is a country lad, wedded to the land, you can find Hanks (or many like him) on rural properties and in pubs all around Australia, Elliot is the city doctor that comes to the small town near where Hank lives. Both are gay. It's not easy for Hank to be'out' and he's not. The book of course deals with the usual prickly issues of being gay in a hostile setting, though Elliot and Hank manage to keep a lid on their relationship.

This is a solid read, there's a bit of humour, and the author covers the rural hard slog lifestyle well. To me though there seemed to be something missing from the chemistry between Hank and Elliot. I would have happily traded in a lot of detail about shearing sheds and country life to have more sparks flying between the lead characters. I found it a good read, just didn't quite hit my buttons the way her first two books did.

Still keeping her on my auto-buy list though.
This was fantastic. I couldn't put it down.. A real love story about real men with all their toughness and vulnerabilities. Set against the realistic background of rural Australia. There were some really special moments throughout the book. Some brought tears to my eyes in the leaving Perth scene after spending the weekend there. Trying not to give spoilers. But a wonderful tear jerker heartfelt scene. And then gorgeous funny moments with the special wool sheep. And lots of great info in there on farming life without it being an info dump. All nicely and seamlessly worked in . I cracked up over the Kiwi joke. Lol. And loved the Aussie culture and the very easy writing style and flow of this author. I could picture everything and could imagine it well from the descriptions like I was right there. Wonderful ending. Love the docs nickname.. Just love the whole book. It totally enthralled me. This is one of my most favorite books I've read in a while. The characters are likeable and lovable. It was bloody excellent!!! Thank you.
