From USA Today best-selling author Isaac Hooke comes this fantastic tale of the unexpected.
The world as we know it is about to end.
Hoodwink Cooper has been sentenced to death. His crime? Attempting to blast a hole in the Forever Gate, the colossal wall that surrounds the city and protects the denizens from the uninhabitable Outside.
As the gols, the humanlike automata who rule the city, prepare to carry out his sentence, a rogue faction plots even greater turmoil. Hoodwink's daughter is embroiled with this cabal, and if Hoodwink gives up the ghost without first extricating her from their clutches, she will most likely join him in the afterlife. What Hoodwink and the cabal members don't realize is that they are all pawns in a greater game whose stakes are the very survival of humanity as a species.
Will Hoodwink escape in time to save his daughter? More importantly, will he break free of the invisible forces that guide him? Or will he succumb to the domination of his unseen masters and cause the breaking of the world, losing not just his daughter, but everything?

It started out great, but I found myself liking it less as the books continued. It was interesting and worth reading, but not worth re-reading, which is my cutoff for recommendation. If I wouldn't re-read it, I won't recommend it to someone else. Also (SPOILER), it's awfully similar to The Matrix movie - down to the details of how the people were in the pods, the poor muscle tone when they emerge, and "jacking" back into the "matrix" (though it's not called that in the book). I can't believe no one mentioned this in the other reviews I read. In fact, it's so similar that I figured the books MUST be the inspiration for the movie, but they aren't mentioned at all (other books are, though, which makes me think this isn't an original story line - or maybe those others are rip-offs!)Product details

The Forever Gate Compendium Edition (Audible Audio Edition) Isaac Hooke Susanna Burney Road to Audio Books Reviews
This is a story arc that I decided to review in its entirety, and it's probably good that I did that. After the enjoyment of Book 1, much of Books 2, 3, and 4 were repetitious and a lot of setup for Book 5. My attitude by the end of Book 4 was "I get it! I know essentially what's coming, so get on with it!" With all that said, though, Book 5 was the best of the bunch, though having to wade through books 2, 3, and 4 in order to get there is a high price to pay. Often, I will review the individual books in a compendium, but in this case, there is no need (or desire). Normally I go into far more detail in my reviews, but in this case, shorter is better. Perhaps it may be an example to the author, who has some excellent ideas, but with far too many words used to present them.
I almost stopped reading this book halfway through and would have given it one star but something made me continue, and I am glad I did. My question for Isaac Hooke is where is you editor, and do you have one, and no, I do not mean you sister who is an English major and can dot all the "i"s or cross all the "t"s. I am going to compare this to a race horse...you have this great horse who has the raw materials to become a champion but what this horse needs is a trainer. With the right trainer, you win the Derby, the gold, but with the wrong trainer or no trainer, the horse is just another plow horse. A good editor can help you to focus, to establish pace, to help with back story, to ask "why", "how" , "and if"; all question that tighten the narrative and create a more powerful and cohesive experience for the reader. This note is not only for Isaac, but for other indie writers that I have read. The raw material is beautiful, substantial, the nuts-and-bolts,...not so good.
I don't really want to talk too much about the story; that could ruin the numerous surprises in store for new readers of this series. Suffice it that when I first "opened" the first chapter, my first thought was "Oh, no! Not one of those medieval-style fantasies!" Well, perhaps not medieval, but there are definitely elements of fantasy, and science fiction, and metaphysics. Hoodwink, as it turns out, is truly suited to his name. The love he has for his fractured family is all the more poignant as the full scope of who is becomes clear. Ari the daughter that's not. . . but is. . . is a strong character in her own right as is Tanner and a host of characters.
Hooke has written a novel (or series of novels--I read the compendium) that draws the reader into a world occupied by engaging characters and a story line that keeps us reading. . . even into the wee hours when we should be sleeping.
Ignore the nay-sayers who say the book is not worth the bother. It obviously just not what they were expecting. However, if you like a "mystery" that really keeps you guessing or a romance that embraces what it means to be human. . . no matter who or what you are. . . The Forever Gate is the story for you.
I read the series some time ago, but forgot to write up a review for one of my favorite authors. Now I understand Mr. Hooke is soon publishing more in the series, so this review is to encourage readers of the compendium. You really will appreciate being able to read start to finish in one place. The reason I say that is because this is a series that flows from book to another so well that you will want to continue reading from one to another. The books are set in such unusual places, with characters that make you suspend what you already know, and absorb their world while you read. I find the books to be so transporting, by which I mean that like any good book, you are removed from your reality and enter into the reality being presented in the books. You also have to think about the characters and places, since they are so unfamiliar, which I enjoy greatly.
It started out great, but I found myself liking it less as the books continued. It was interesting and worth reading, but not worth re-reading, which is my cutoff for recommendation.
